Hotel guests arrive at every hour, often after driving for six of them, and frequently without transport once they've checked in. What's available on the property between 10pm and 6am is the difference between a good stay and a small frustration they remember.
The gap your front desk can't cover
Most properties sell a small selection at the desk during staffed hours. Guests who check in at 11pm or wake at 5am for a drive get nothing. A self-serve cooler covers the whole clock without adding a task to your night audit.
The complaint isn't that you didn't have what they wanted. It's that there was nowhere to get it.
Extended stay is a different animal
Weekly-rate and extended-stay properties have guests living on site, often without a kitchen and often without a car. That's a genuinely under-served group in Waco. Demand there looks less like a snack purchase and more like groceries — real food, drinks in quantity, breakfast items.
Where to place it
- Near the ice machine or vending alcove. Guests already walk there, and it's usually on every floor plan.
- Off the lobby. Catches arrivals, and it's visible on the walk to the elevator.
- By the breakfast area. Covers the hours before and after service.
Replacing an under-used pantry
If you run a small market or pantry that needs a staff member to open it, ring it up, or restock it, that's the operating cost a self-serve cooler removes. Guests tap, take what they want and go; you're not counting inventory at shift change.
Practical notes
- Cashless is essential — travellers carry cards, not quarters
- Placement should be visible from a walking route, not tucked in a back corridor
- Multi-floor properties often do better with one well-placed unit than several under-used ones
